Newport Harbor - Rose Island LighthouseIf you want a truly unique experience, you can stay at the Rose Island Lighthouse overnight. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information, see the Rose Island Lighthouse site
The Lighthouse is located in the Harbor (Narragansett Bay) ,in the shadow of he Newport Bridge. In addition to the lighthouse, Rose Island was once a Naval Torpedo Station. It is also a sanctuary for nesting birds from early April through about the middle of August which means access to island and beaches except the immediate area of the lighthouse is severely limited. The island is also home to Fort Hamilton which dates back to the late 1700's. The area is currently off limits due to hazmat and overall deterioration of the structures. The Foundation is working toward renovating the fort. There are some drawings and photographs of the fort available at the Library of Congress. For more information, see the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation website
