A boat tour of Newport Harbor
and Narraganset Bay is a great way to see Newport from a different
perspective. You will want to choose a tour that suits your personality.
The tours will let you see some of the sights such as the New York Yacht
Club, Castle Hill, Rose Island, Fort Adams and other landmarks from the
water. How close you get will depend on the boat you choose. Currently
only one boat will take tours to see the mansions from the water.
Sailing - You can take
a sailing tour which will give you the experience of yachting.
Motor Vessel - There
are several larger boats taking tours. Some of these offer dinner and
lunch excursions where you can dine while watching the scenery
Fast Boats - There are
several tours with cigarette type racing boats where you can get a more
thrilling tour. There is even a reproduction of an old rum runner.
Smaller boats - Many
of the smaller boats offer charters. The advantage here is that the the
captain will usually be willing to customize your tour and can get
closer to some of the sites. Captains taking passengers for hire must
have a Coast Guard License. Your Hotel or Bed and Breakfast may have
information on available boats.
Helicopter Tours. -
You can view Newport from the air.
Train Rides - There is
an excursion train that leaves Newport and rides along the coast
offering dinner and luncheon tours.
Tips -

the weather since reduced visibility can affect your experience
Take extra batteries for your
camera and extra memory if you have it. There are plenty of photo
opportunities.
