Dining in the Newport AreaNewport has dozens of restaurants ranging from neighborhood grilles to upscale waterfront restaurants. Most of them will be extremely busy during the summer season. Overall we found the food and service to be very good. If you go during the busy season, be sure to make reservations and allow plenty of time to find parking. Newport has it's own commercial fishing fleet which means that you will find fresh seafood, lobster and shellfish on most of the menus. Many of the restaurants have a large percentage of their tables set for dining al fresco. If the weather is bad this will result in longer waits for tables since everyone will be moved inside. In addition to traditional restaurants, there are boat cruises and train rides that offer lunch and dinner. When you walk through the wharf area you can smell the food cooking which will surely leave you looking for lunch or dinner. Restaurant ListingsWe've listed restaurants in the Newport area by town. In addition to Newport itself, there are a number of restaurants in neighboring Middletown. Reviews:We've reviewed several restaurants in Newport. We dine with our 12 year old son so we look for restaurants that are child friendly. Our preference is for relaxed, casual dining, great food and decent service. Whenever possible, we look for restaurants in historic buildings and/or those with a special ambience or view. All of the restaurants we visited provided a rewarding experience. The staff in all the restaurants was friendly although in some cases a bit slow. However, we visited during the last week in August when most shore resorts are short handed because students who work there are returning to college, but the number of guests has not dropped off.
